City of Culture, Learning & Faiths

Marvel at Liverpool’s two stunning and contrasting cathedrals which bookend this tour.  Stroll along Hope Street, one of the city’s most important thoroughfares, and discover the beautiful architecture and intriguing history of a variety of cultural and educational buildings such as the award-winning Everyman Theatre, the Philharmonic Hall and Blackburne House.  Walk down neighbouring streets to see Georgian terraces, famous pubs and many historic buildings restored for modern use.

The Ropewalks: Growth, Decline and Regeneration

Discover an area which once played a crucial role in the growth of the city as a world class seaport.  Evidence of this can still be seen in its large collection of former factories, warehouses and merchants’ houses.  Since the late 1990’s, the Ropewalks has been redeveloped, bringing derelict premises back to life and creating new buildings and open spaces.  See a range of architectural styles in buildings such as FACT, Alma de Cuba, The Bridewell and The Royal Institution in this vibrant and popular district.

Sculpture, Culture & Civic Pride

Explore Liverpool’s beautiful Cultural Quarter, home to some of the city’s most awe-inspiring buildings and neo-classical architecture.  See the stunning interior of St. George's Hall before taking a closer look at some of the wonderful sculpture and monuments on The Plateau.  Then stroll down William Brown Street to see more fascinating places of culture such as the Walker Art Gallery, the Central Library and the World Museum.  The tour ends in St. John’s Gardens where more historic memorials can be found.

Liverpool ONE: Remaking a City Centre

Find out how 42 acres of land in the heart of Liverpool were transformed into this thriving commercial, residential and leisure complex which connects the city centre to the waterfront.  Existing buildings were restored and new structures and open spaces created.  See a range of architectural styles from the historic Bluecoat to the distinctive Bling Bling building.  Liverpool ONE has proved to be a highly successful development and has had a huge impact on the economy and fortunes of the city.
