[short_description]
Britain’s first astronaut, Helen Sharman, is coming to Liverpool to mesmerise guests at Liverpool Cathedral with a talk that will be out of this world. In her first appearance of 2019, and set under the backdrop of Luke Jerram’s Earth – Gaia, Helen will enthuse her audience about Space, STEM and the wonders of science.
Helen Sharman is a pioneer and role model for people of all ages and an inspirational speaker.
She became the first British Astronaut when, in May 1991, she launched on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and spent 8 days orbiting the Earth, living and working on the MIR Space Station.
She was selected from 13,000 applicants but didn’t think she stood a chance of being chosen when she applied, after hearing an advert on the radio on her way home after work.
But Helen was exactly the right person - calm, practical, friendly, professional and a team player.
She describes the meticulous training and preparation, learning Russian, launch and landing, how weightlessness feels, her science experiments, the team spirit, and readjusting to life on Earth.
*Please note there will be no access to the Cathedral from 3pm unless attending Evensong. The Cathedral will be cleared following the service. This event is suitable for ages 10 and over.
School groups are invited to attend a unique talk with Britain’s first astronaut, Helen Sharman, on the skills required to make it into space. Helen will discuss areas that pupils need to focus on in school to excel as an astronaut and inspire them to undertake careers within space exploration and STEM subjects.
As Helen is an inspiring and highly engaging role model for young people, many schools have named Houses and Laboratories after her – including in London, Kent, Rugby, Leeds and Hartlepool.
* Please note that there is no onsite coach parking and limited parking for cars and minibuses available on a first come first served basis
