The Stories of the Firefly brings together visuals, experimental storytelling and sound. Written through the use of what Battista refers to as ritualistic writing, the resulting performance is a visceral, hypnotic, visionary journey. Inspired by the work of artists such as Laurie Anderson, Pauline Oliveros, Kimmo Pohjonen and Patti Smith it reflects on the poetics of active imagination, Buddhist philosophies, and animistic ecologies. This specific version of the performance is accompanied by the vocal artist Steve Boyland.
Silvia Battista is a multidisciplinary artist and scholar with more than twenty years of experience working with performance, experimental theatre, writing and drawings. She is Senior Lecturer in Performance and Theatre Studies at Liverpool Hope University and she continues to present her practice internationally.
Steve Boyland is an improvising vocalist, performance artist and voice teacher of international stature. His reputation is founded on the eclecticism and intensity of his solo work, as well as a portfolio of acclaimed collaborations with international practitioners in the fields of music, visual art and dance.

The Bhagavatam is one of Hinduisms’ eighteen great puranas, traditional Hindu texts that took form during the medieval period. Navarasa Mohana relates to the tenth chapter of The Bhagavatam and translates as "Nine Emotions (Nava = Nine and Rasa = Emotions)".
The Navarasa, in the scriptures therefore refer to the nine expressions that humans often show. These are love (shringaara), laughter (haasya), kind-heartedness or compassion (karuna), anger (roudra), courage (veera), fear (bhayaanaka), disgust (bheebhatsya), wonder or surprise (adbhutha) and peace or tranquility (shaantha).
