I am delighted to be able to announce the launch of our Angel Field Festival at Liverpool Hope University’s Creative Campus to take place from 24th June to 3rd July – and will be one of the first fully ‘live’ festivals to take place in the UK since the commencement of the world pandemic.
2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the sending of the first email and the 50th anniversary of the development of the first microprocessor. The main theme of our festival this year marks these anniversaries – Communication and Information
There are many things that lockdown has taught us about what is important – vital even – to life, possibly above all it’s the loss of the presence of others – those close to us, as well as the possibility of spending time with those that we’ve never met before; the opportunity to make new friends and expand our lives – to communicate and gain information.
It’s been too long since we’ve been able to commune around acts of artistic endeavour – surely amongst the most profound of imprints or traces as proof of our existence – and to celebrate sharing time with others – to communicate
It’s my hope that the Angel Field Festival this summer will offer us many occasions to share time and space with others allowing us opportunities to marvel, laugh and contemplate life.
The festival also marks the centenary of Astor Piazzolla – the Argentinian composer that elevated the Tango form to stunning heights of virtuosity; the centenary of Schoenberg’s serialism and the centenary of the Charlie Chaplin film The Kid – two buildings on our Creative Campus resonate strongly with this film: Chaplin went to school in what we call the Cornerstone Building and another of our buildings served as the national headquarters to the NSPCC.
One of our concerts marks the retirement from Liverpool Hope University of Professor Stephen Pratt – in my opinion the most distinguished composer of his generation to come from Liverpool – performed by some fabulous musicians of the Pixels Ensemble.
I am very grateful for the support from our friends at the Confucius Institute Liverpool & University of Liverpool for their support to our Chinese-themed events – a splendidly colourful day is in store for us all on that Sunday
This time of year - in normal times – our Creative Campus is brought to new levels of vibrancy through the work of our Fine Art Show – the same is happening this year, please do come to view the work of our gifted students.
Liverpool’s love of Country & Western Music goes back at least since the 1950s – we’re marking this with a performance of the London-based C&W outfit Django Rhinestone.
The festival features music, fine art, story-telling, dance, drama, film, magic and comedy. I always attempt to bring international culture to Everton; with the current travel constraints this has proven much more difficult. However, we can say that we have culture on offer from China, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Serbia, Russia, Australia, USA, India amongst many other regions of the world as well as that, that is much closer to home.
